Graham Coxon

Graham Coxon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Graham Leslie Coxon (born 12 March 1969 in Rinteln, West Germany) is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and painter. He came to prominence as the lead guitarist, backing vocalist and occasional lead vocalist of rock band Blur, and is also a critically acclaimed solo artist, having recorded seven solo albums. His artistic and musical contribution is featured on all seven of Blur's albums, from 1991's Leisure to 2003's Think Tank. Although credited as a songwriter on most Blur tracks, his most significant lyrical contributions appeared on the hit singles "Tender" and "Coffee & TV"; a number of tracks in the band's catalogue were also penned mainly by Coxon. The cover of 1999's 13 was designed by Coxon.

In 2002, he left Blur, following a bitter dispute with the other members, notably Damon Albarn. As a result, he played guitar and was credited as a songwriter on only the final track for the following year's Think Tank. In September 2007, Graham Coxon rejoined the band and in late 2008 Damon Albarn announced that the band would reunite 2009 for a number of shows.

Of Coxon's seven solo albums, four of them were recorded while a member of the band. Coxon is capable of playing several other instruments, besides guitar, and is famous for recording his albums single-handedly, without much help from session musicians. Other notable British guitarists such as Jonny Greenwood and Noel Gallagher have praised Coxon's musicality and talent, with the latter calling him "one of the most gifted guitarists of his generation."[1][2]

Coxon recently released his most critically revered album to date, The Spinning Top, on new label Transgressive Records.

Early life

With fellow Blur member, Damon Albarn, he lived in Colchester, in South East England, as a child. He appeared on the popular BBC children's show Blue Peter twice, both times playing clarinet.

Music career

in BLUR

Graham Coxon studied Fine Arts at Goldsmiths College, London, for two years, where early on he met bassist Alex James, until he quit due to the increasing success of his band at the time, Seymour, who later changed its name to Blur because the recording company, Food Recording, thought 'Seymour' sounded unprofessional. As well as providing all guitars and backing vocals, Graham's low-fi and alternative musical style and tastes highly influenced the band's less commercial music in the late 90's. He also sang lead vocals on You're So Great, Coffee and TV and the chorus of Tender.

He left the band in 2002 following a dispute with the other members and his alleged alcohol problems. As he stated in an interview in 2006; “I had a breakthrough, I think my life just became calmer, I gave up drinking. My priorities changed as I had a young daughter. The group didn’t want me to record for the Think Tank album, so I took it as a sign to leave". His last contribution to Blur was a song called "Battery in Your Leg", the closing song on Blur's 2003 album Think Tank, before leaving the line-up.

Damon Albarn has frequently said that the door is always open for Coxon to rejoin the band. In 2004 it was rumoured that he was rejoining Blur, but both sides denied this. Coxon stated that although a reunion meeting was a good one, he would not be rejoining Blur and remained firm on his decision. It seems they patched-up some differences and continued their friendship, despite the turmoil surrounding Coxon's departure. However, at the time Coxon seemed adamant and refused to rejoin the band.

After Damon Albarn's revealing that he and Coxon have rebuilt their relationship, on 9 December 2008, Blur announced that the whole band will reunite for a show at Hyde Park on 3 July 2009. [3] More dates have been announced and the band will play festival dates at Glastonbury, T in the Park and Oxegen 2009 as well as headlining shows in Manchester, Newcastle, Wolverhampton, Goldsmiths College and the East Anglian Railway Museum in Colchester. Blur also played one show in Lyon, France

Solo work (1998-present)

Coxon had already released three solo albums while as a member of Blur before his 2002 departure. His first, released on his own Transcopic label was The Sky is Too High in 1998, a ramshackle mixture of English folk music and 1960s-style garage rock, influenced by Billy Childish. This was followed by the more extreme The Golden D in 2000 and the thoughtful Dylan-Drakesque Crow Sit on Blood Tree (2001). After going solo full time, he released The Kiss of Morning in 2002. The album proved to be his most accessible to date and was promoted with the single "Escape Song" which proved to be an interesting hybrid of Syd Barrett's "Octopus" and progressive rock trail-blazers The Nice. In 2004, Coxon released his fifth solo album Happiness in Magazines, produced by ex-Blur and The Smiths producer Stephen Street. This proved to be his most successful album to date, and he received the NME Award for 'Best Solo Artist' in 2005.

In March 2006 he released his sixth solo album, called Love Travels at Illegal Speeds, again produced by Stephen Street. It marks Coxon's first album away from his now-defunct indie label 'Transcopic'. The LP was preceded by the singles "Standing On My Own Again" on 27 February and "You & I". Coxon embarked on a tour of the UK, starting at Newcastle University. He also got involved in a single supporting the England national football team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The song was a re-working of the Sham 69 hit "Hurry Up Harry", and was released as "Sham 69 and The Special Assembly" (as well as Coxon and Sham 69, Virgin Radio DJ Christian O'Connell, who had run a competition on his show to find a band to record a song in support of the team, was involved in the recording of the song). "Hurry Up England" entered the UK Singles Chart at #10.

Coxon in 2009

In October 2006, Coxon released a double live album Burnt to Bitz: At the Astoria immediately after his sold-out London Astoria show. The album features 27 songs, with at least one song from each of his albums. In July 2007 Coxon released a single with Paul Weller, called "This Old Town". The single peaked at #39 in the UK Singles Chart.

Coxon's seventh 15-track studio album titled The Spinning Top, produced again by Stephen Street[4], was released on 11 May 2009. Coxon says the LP, which is primarily acoustic, follows a narrative - the story of a man from birth to death. "The album is mainly an acoustic journey although there is, of course, some explosive electric guitar action," he explained. "There are some guests too! Robyn Hitchcock supplies some counter-attack guitar, Jas Singh plays dilruba and jori with his friends Gurjit Sembhi on taus and Jaskase Singh on esraj. Danny Thompson plays the legendary Victoria, Graham Fox gives plenty of swing on the drums and sizzle cymbals and Louis Vause tinkles the ivories."[5] Pre-release response has been very positive, with Monday Field of Frank Booth Review dubbing the album "a staggering artistic achievement, and Coxon’s best solo release to date

Musicality and instruments

In his solo albums Coxon plays nearly all of the instruments. Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood praised Coxon's musicality and talent: "Anything that has more of Graham's guitar playing, I'm bound to like."[1] Noel Gallagher of Oasis has described Coxon as one of the most gifted guitarists of his generation.[2]

During his days in Blur, Graham was mostly seen using a Fender Telecaster guitar. In earlier years (such as the Leisure era) he was better known for using a Gibson Les Paul, which he would also use for later songs such as "Trimm Trabb" (although he used different guitars for songs such as "Sing" or "Oily Water" which he would originally have used a Les Paul for). He also made considerable use of effects pedals such as distortion (most notably "Song 2") and delay (a significant example being "Essex Dogs"). Graham himself has admitted that he got a bit greedy with Telecasters. These days, Graham often uses more than one guitar whilst performing his solo work, Gibson SGs being one of them, and a Burns London Sonic.

Personal life

In 2000, his ex girlfriend, Anna Norlander, gave birth to their daughter, Pepper Bäck Troy Coxon.

[edit] Other artistic endeavours

Coxon at the 2005 Leeds Festival

Graham's independent label, Transcopic, was co-managed with his good friend, and then business partner, Jamie Davis. Jamie now runs Independent label Ark Recordings. Graham's artistic influence was evident across all aspects of the record label. Graham illustrated and designed all of his own album art, and collaborated with his good friend and creative director, Nick Craske on the insect ridden 2001 Transcopic website; they created abstract digital work for the release of The Spinning Top and shot the footage for Sorrow's Army & In The Morning videos. Graham also continued painting a series of personal work, most of which remained unseen until 2004, when he exhibited at the ICA in London. [1]

Apart from being a musician, Coxon is also a visual artist, and he designs all of his album sleeves. He has also designed album sleeves for other artists. He studied fine art at Goldsmiths College for around a year in 1988, leaving to pursue his musical career with Blur. In his time there he mixed with upcoming talents such as Damien Hirst, Michael Landy, Sam Taylor-Wood, and Abigail Lane, some of the future leading lights of the Britart movement.

In July 2006, Graham Coxon wrote and had published a foreword for a new edition of Herman Hesse's novel, Narcissus and Goldmund. His work also featured on the cover of English folk singer Kate Rusby's album 'The Girl Who Couldn't Fly'.

In September 2006 Coxon revealed a musical soundscape created especially for "Verheaven" an exhibition at London's Riflemaker Gallery of the work of artist Julie Verhoeven.

Coxon appears on John McCusker's Under One Sky, providing the song "All Has Gone".

In 2009, Coxon was heavily involved in the creation of the Pete Doherty solo album Grace/Wastelands. But Doherty has entered a period of sobriety, during which he holed up with Coxon to work on his debut solo album, Grace/Wasteland, (released 24 March 2009) a diverse collection of 12 songs that bounce between reggae and Doherty's standard post-punk. Coxon played on all but one track on the album.

Discography

BLINK 182 - Adam's Song

I never thought I'd die alone
I laughed the loudest, who'd have known?
I traced the cord back to the wall
No wonder it was never plugged in at all

I took my time, I hurried up
The choice was mine, I didn't think enough
I'm too depressed to go on
You'll be sorry when I'm gone

I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get outside

The world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over, we'd survived
I couldn't wait 'til I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

I never thought I'd die alone
Another six months, I'll be unknown
Give all my things to all my friends
You'll never step foot in my room again

You'll close it off, board it up
Remember the time that I spilled the cup
Of apple juice in the hall
Please tell mom this is not her fault

I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get outside

The world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over, we'd survived
I couldn't wait 'til I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

I never conquered, rarely came
Tomorrow holds such better days
Days when I can still feel alive
When I can't wait to get outside

The world is wide, the time goes by
The tour is over, I've survived
I can't wait 'til I get home
To pass the time in my room alone

Musical career

[edit] Blink-182 (1992–2005, 2009–present)

Blink-182. Barker with Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus in 2003

In 1996, Barker began touring with The Aquabats, and under the stage name "The Baron Von Tito". Blink-182 was also on the bill, and when then-drummer Scott Raynor was removed from the band, Barker was asked to fill in. This required him to learn the entire set (over 20 songs) in less than two hours and perform them at that night's show, in addition to playing a set with The Aquabats. His efforts earned him an offer to join Blink-182, which Barker accepted.

With Barker, Blink-182 released their best selling album to date, Enema of the State (1999), followed by Take off Your Pants and Jacket (2001), and Blink-182 (2003). After Barker drummed for Blink-182 for seven years, the band split up in February 2005.

In an interview with TMZ, regarding a reunion, Barker states "We're all friends" and "Everyone's getting along pretty good."[2]

At the 51st Grammy Awards, while announcing the award for Rock Album of The Year, Blink-182 announced they were getting back together. This was the first step towards Blink's current status.

Barker and Blink-182 have finished a 50 date North American tour and will release a new album in 2010 and also start their European tour. They played shows including Hartford, D.C., Madison Square Garden, and Boston. During the tour Blink played with bands like Weezer, Fall Out Boy, Asher Roth, The All American Rejects, and Taking Back Sunday.

[edit] Side projects (2002–present)

Barker said he has always been interested in many genres of music outside punk rock, especially hip-hop. In a 2002 interview with MTV he said, "I probably listen to more hip-hop and drum'n'bass than I do punk rock music.".[3] Not being able to explore these interests within Blink-182, Barker participated in two hip hop related side projects during that the time: Transplants and Expensive Taste.

Box Car Racer is a side project begun with Tom DeLonge of Blink-182 in 2002. This project resulted in one self-titled album which was released that year. DeLonge said he asked Barker to play drums so that he wouldn't have to find and pay a session drummer to come in.

Transplants is a hip-hop induced punk band for which Barker partnered with Tim Armstrong of Rancid and Rob Aston (former roadie for Rancid). Transplants released two studio records as well as a remixed version of their second album which was chopped and screwed by rapper and hip-hop artist, Paul Wall.[4] The first album released by Transplants was their self-titled album in 2002. The second Transplants record, Haunted Cities, was released by LaSalle Records in June 2005. After the Vans Warped Tour of 2005, the members decided to disband. This was confirmed by vocalist Rob Aston in January 2006 during an interview.[citation needed] In January 2010, Barker announced that the Transplants would reform for new material.[5]

He was best friends with the late DJ AM, Adam Goldstein.

Barker has produced or worked on albums with the Black Eyed Peas, Pink and Pharrell. He appears on Bun B's album, Trill (2005) with Skinhead Rob for the bonus track, "Late Night Creepin'". In 2006 he was a producer on T.I.'s fourth album, King. Also in 2006 he played drums for several songs on Avril Lavigne's third album, "The Best Damn Thing".[6] He also dueted with Rihanna on a remix of her hit "Umbrella", he also appeared in her video. Barker also had a remix with the Rap artist Eminem, on the song 3 A.M.

In late 2005 Barker started a new band, +44 with fellow Blink-182 member Mark Hoppus. +44 only released one studio album, When Your Heart Stops Beating. They played several tour dates with Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, and Cobra Starship.

In 2006, he and Rob Aston joined Paul Wall in forming a new hip hop group called Expensive Taste.

Barker made a very well received remix of Soulja Boy's "Crank That". In a similar fashion to the Soulja Boy remix, he has also remixed Flo Rida's single "Low" that was later included within the deluxe version of Flo Rida's debut album. Barker is a playable character in Guitar Hero: World Tour and his remix of "Low" is available as downloadable content. Barker is also featured on The Game's latest album, L.A.X., drumming on the song "Dope Boys".

He was the drummer for all of the performers at the MTV Video Music Awards of 2008, including Kid Rock and LL Cool J.

In August 2009, Matt Sorum revealed that Barker will appear on Slash, Slash's upcoming solo album.[7]

In June 2009, he played drums in the BET Awards for Jamie Foxx's performance of "Blame It".

In November 2009, Barker made a remix with hip-hop artist Drake's song "Forever", featuring Eminem, Lil Wayne and Kanye West.

In January 2010, Barker announced of a new remix of Snoop Dogg's new single, "I Wanna Rock" via his Twitter account.

In February 2010, Steve Vai mentioned in his newsletter and website that now he's working on a version of Stairway to Heaven for Mary J. Blige with Travis Barker on drums, Orianthi on guitar, and Randy Jackson on bass.

In February 2010, it was announced that Travis Barker will work with A-Trak for club shows such as he did with DJ AM. The first shows will take place on March 9th and 10th at The Roxy in West Hollywood.[8]

[edit] Personal life

Barker's marriage to former Miss USA Shanna Moakler was featured in MTV's Meet the Barkers (2005–2006). His marriage and personal life have been considerable media fodder following his divorce and a brief relationship with Hilton Hotel heiress Paris Hilton in 2006.[9] In early 2009, Barker and Moakler decided to get back together.[10] On April 1, 2009, reps for both Barker and Moakler confirmed they had split following an argument at their home which required police attention. The argument was said to be caused after Barker confronted Moakler about her allegedly having an affair with Gerard Butler while he was recovering from his plane crash. Moakler's reps deny any reports of an affair.[11]

Barker also has a vast and unique collection of ghetto blasters and is a self-proclaimed car enthusiast.[12]

[edit] Plane crash

On September 19, 2008, Barker was injured when the Learjet 60 in which he was a passenger crashed outside Columbia, South Carolina.[13] The jet was headed for Van Nuys, California.[14] According to the Federal Aviation Administration; the plane was departing the airport when air traffic controllers saw sparks emanating from the plane. It went off the runway, smashed through a fence, crossed a nearby road, slammed into an embankment and caught fire.[14][15] Barker had performed the night before at an event with former Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell, Gavin DeGraw and DJ AM.[13] Barker was transported to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, where he was listed in critical condition.[13] DJ AM and John Blasph were also injured in the crash, with DJ AM listed in critical condition.[13] Four others were killed in the crash, three males and one female. With autopsies being performed to identify the bodies,[16] two of the deceased were crew members, and two were passengers, including Chris Baker, Barker's personal assistant who often appeared in Meet The Barkers,[13] and Charles Still, Barker's security guard.[17] On September 21, Dr. Fred Mullins, medical director of the Burn Center reported that Barker sustained second and third degree burns on his lower body and torso and is expected to fully recover within a year.[18] Barker stopped his vegetarian diet and began eating meat to increase his protein intake and possibly speed up healing of his burns.[19]

Barker survived the incident, enabling him to return to the recording studio in November 2008 with long time friend and Keys to the Cadillac drummer Mike Barbalaci. On his first television interview since the crash, he said to MTV, "I'm already playing my drums again, and I'm already back in the studio". Elaborating by stating that the return to the studio "was like riding a bike. It was really exciting to know I still have my chops. It still felt good... I still can make it around the kit. Everything felt right, so I'm thankful to be able to play."[20]

Barker sued the plane's owners, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., and an airplane maintenance company on November 21, 2008. He sought more than $25,000 in damages "for pain and suffering, disfigurement, loss of earnings, and medical and legal expenses", claiming that the companies had "improperly operated and maintained the Learjet". The lawsuit claims the Learjet's pilots were "improperly trained and should not have tried to take off rather than continue down the runway. The mother of Barker's bodyguard, Charles Monroe Still Jr., who was killed in the crash, joined the lawsuit. She sued the companies for "damages including grief and sorrow, funeral expenses and loss of earnings."[21] The court case was settled in December 2009, with lawyer William L. Robinson, who represented some of the companies, saying the terms of the settlement are confidential.[22]

On December 1, 2008, TV Guide reported that Barker would make his first appearance with DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) since the two survived the plane crash. The duo performed at New Year's Nation's[23] Los Angeles New Year's Eve Party at The Wiltern.[24][25] Their performance was streamed live on the Internet via New Year's Nation's official site, and broadcast at other New Year's Nation parties across the US.[26][27][28] Of the gig, Barker told press, "I'm ready to get back onstage with AM and continue to rock the house. I'm very excited to bring in the New Year in my hometown of L.A."[29][30] DJ AM died on August 28, 2009 of an accidental drug overdose in his New York City apartment.

Physical Description: Tall and muscular with broad shoulders. Charming looks. Brilliant green/brown eyes...

Background: His father was a normal average man and his mother was a regular normal woman. He always had lots of friends and he always seemed to be a trouble maker from the start. He was the second child in a family of 3 kids and was a happy boy, when he went out and did father and son activites with his dad. He didn't mind seeing as how his only real friend was his father and it gave him a lot of time to explore his life and the people around him.
He found out early that his attitude enabled him to fly through school at harsh levels, making him lowest but most popular of his class. He enjoyed music, especially playing the drums. He never got introduced to the guitar ‘till he was 15. He was always popular for his looks, and he always found an interest in girls, but things changed when he fell in love with Jen.

Personal: He is very shy at first and tends to spend a lot of time to himself reading or just goofing around. Once befriended though he is a loyal and reliable guy. He enjoys reading and writing. He dislikes large crowds and people who are conceited. His biggest fear is that he should fail and dishonor his family name. He keeps himself motivated by his choice in music and his closest of friends. In his spare time ((If he has any)) Tom enjoys skate-boarding and snow-boarding, also just hanging around with his wife, Jen, and German Shephard 'Grey'. Tom's favorite colors are orage and black. Tom tends to often paint his finger nails on his left hand black. Tom is a member in two bands. Blink 182 and Box Car Racer. He is the vocalist and guitarist in both of them.

Birthday: December 13, 1975 on a Saturday((That makes him 28))
Birth Place: San Diego, California, USA
Birth Name: Thomas Matthew DeLonge
Nick Name On Stage: "Hot Pants"

Biography: Tom’s parents are Connie and Thomas Delonge SR. He has an older brother (Shon) and a younger sister (Kari). He attended Poway High School were he had a pretty good (not really) reputation as school trouble maker. An old friend gave him a guitar for his 15th birthday and he was basically clueless on what to really do with the darn thing. When he was away at camp one year, one of his cabin mates got Tom into liking punk rock, so that’s when Tom decided to learn how to play the guitar. Blink-182 started in 1992 and became huge in 1998, in between the years of of "Dude Ranch" and "Enema of the State". The song's and the way Tom, Mark and Travis perform their magic on stage is usualy most popular for ages of 20 and under.((Im a crazy 13 year old who loves Blink 182. Most of the time you will find me waisting my life at the computer looking up info on Tom, Mark, and Travis.))

Tom is the guitarist and vocalist of the band Blink 182. Tom met his wife, Jen, at a party at least a half of a decade ago. Ever since then Tom has been “Madly In Love” with his high school sweet heart and decided to ask “The Magical Question” of “Will you marry me?” Jen, being so exited and totally in love with this guy of course said the typical answer of “Yes”. Soon after getting happily married they had their first baby on July 15, 2002. They named their bouncy baby girl Ava Elizabeth DeLonge. Ava was born at 5:30 A.M. at California Scripps Hospital in LA and she weighed a healthy 7 pounds. The couples happy bundle of joy is now a 2 and a half year old beautiful girl. Tom is very protective of his daughter, he will soon be writing songs about how he will keep her safe, and what would happen if someone is to mess with her. Tom and Mark have made a site called loserkids.com there are great chats and things to buy. Sometimes if your lucky Tom or Mark might be on the chat page trying to convince kids its the real them! But they dont stay on for very long so hurry up and get an account on loserkids.com!

How did you propose to your wife?:

Tom: Driving on a bus across Massachusettes to Boston. It was around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, kind of winter, so all the trees are different colors kinda, and it was kinda getting darker, and we're sitting on the bus, and I asked her.

Impulse or planned?:

Tom: It was just impulse. But she was asleep. So I woke her up, and I go, 'Hey, honey, did you hear what I said?' and she said, "Yeah, yeah." I'm all, "Oh, okay, well, she said yeah," so I went back to bed. Then I set everything up, and then she felt bad and had to do it.

Hobbies?:

Tom: I paint and I read books. I paint pictures of little Tim Burton-type characters. They're not very good, but it's fun.

Musical career

When DeLonge attended Rancho Bernardo High School, he was introduced to Mark Hoppus through Hoppus' sister, Anne Hoppus. Tom had previously met Scott Raynor at a school's battle of the bands and decided to form a band together that would become Blink-182, originally just Blink but the band had to change for legal reasons with supposed plagiarism from an Irish techno band. Raynor was replaced with Travis Barker in 1998 for reasons never formally released by Hoppus or Delonge. It was later anounced that he had been asked to attend rehab, due to a serious drinking problem. Travis was on tour with The Aquabats, another band touring along with Blink-182. After sitting in on two shows Barker formally joined Blink-182. With Travis on board Blink-182 released Enema of the State, which was met with a huge amount of mainstream success, spawning three hit singles. Follow-up Take Off Your Pants and Jacket went straight to No.1 on the Billboard 200. In 2003, Blink-182 released their eponymous album. DeLonge then decided to leave the band, allegedly due to mounting tensions and communication difficulties, creating a rift between him and the other members of the band. Blink-182 announced an 'indefinite hiatus' in February 2005.

Following Travis Barker's Learjet crash, DeLonge's former band mate, Mark Hoppus, posted on his blog (Himynameismark.com) on November 18, 2008, that all three band mates had communicated for the past couple of months after Barker's plane crash, which killed 4 people and left Barker and DJ AM in critical condition. This post fueled rumors among fans that a reunion was imminent[citation needed]. Adding to the speculation was an announcement made by MTV.com on February 5, 2009 that Blink-182 would reunite to present an award at the 51st Grammy Awards. This presentation marked the first time the trio had been together on stage since 2004.[3] Before presenting the award for Best Rock Album, the band announced that they were reuniting; this announcement was followed shortly by a message posted on the band's website [4]. Tom was quoted as saying "live life as if it was the last record played on the jukebox".

On February 9, 2009, Tom opened up to Extra about the Blink-182 reunion saying: "When you're in a band, you have this unspoken bond. You're kind of family with your boys. We took a break for a little bit. I think when Travis had the event happen to him it was something that pulled us back together... we always knew it was inevitable, we just needed something to break the ice." [5] Blink-182 toured across the United States along with Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, Chester French, Asher Roth, All American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday, and Fall Out Boy, they're planning to release their newest album around late 2010. It has also been confirmed by Mark Hoppus in an MTV interview that there will be a 2010 European tour.

Box Car Racer (2002-2003)

Box Car Racer was a side-project from two members of the band Blink-182, featuring guitarist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker. DeLonge formed Box Car Racer to experiment with and record ideas he felt were not "Blink-friendly", along with Travis Barker. David Kennedy from Hazen Street completed the group and an eponymous album was recorded. Although Tom handled bass duties, the band hired Kennedy's friend Anthony Celestino for the corresponding tour. Guests on the album included Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 on the song "Elevator", and Tim Armstrong from Rancid and Jordan Pundik from New Found Glory on "Cat Like Thief".

Angels & Airwaves (2005–Present)

Tom DeLonge is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Angels and Airwaves. Other members in the band include high school friend and former Hazen Street guitarist and Box Car Racer guitarist David Kennedy, on drums former Rocket from the Crypt and The Offspring drummer Atom Willard, on bass former 30 Seconds to Mars bassist Matt Wachter. AVA is influenced by a number of bands including U2, Pink Floyd and The Cure. They released their debut album We Don't Need to Whisper on 20 May, 2006. On April 23, 2007 it was announced that Ryan Sinn would not be playing at the free Earth Day concert at the M.I.T. campus due to difficulties within the band. He was later replaced with former 30 Seconds to Mars bassist Matt Wachter. The band's second full-length album entitled I-Empire debuted on the Billboard 200 Chart at No. 9 and sold 66,000 in its first week.

On June 21, 2008, DeLonge launched Modlife, a social-networking site and online operating system for musicians, bloggers and businesses. DeLonge's purpose is to "fix" the music industry. The band then released a documentary involving their music, titled Start the Machine.

LOVE is the third studio album by Angels & Airwaves, which was officially released worldwide on February 14, 2010 after being delayed from Christmas 2009. A movie, based on the album, is being produced and will show in theaters in Spring 2010, it is also called LOVE.

Musical equipment

Fender Guitars worked with DeLonge to create the Tom DeLonge Stratocaster (signature guitar) which consisted of a solid alder body fitted with a single Seymour Duncan Invader Bridge pickup. It was controlled by a lone volume knob adding to its simple design. At first, the Stratocasters were fitted with an American 2-Point tremolo system and was later replaced by a hardtail bridge. Its neck was made of solid maple with a rosewood fretboard, although there have been some custom Stratocasters that were fitted with maple fretboards. The necks included a large 1970s "CBS" headstock.

In 2002, whilst touring with Box Car Racer, Tom began collaborating with Gibson to create a new Signature Model. He started off by using a standard Gibson ES-335, with all but the bridge volume knob removed, and the bridge pick-up replaced with a Seymour Duncan Invader bridge pick-up. This guitar was eventually covered with many different stickers including band stickers and clothing line stickers from Atticus Clothing, Macbeth Footwear and Famous Stars and Straps. This guitar can be seen in Boxcar Racer live photos and in the studio videos for the Untitled Album. In one of the videos, a prototype for his signature is seen that included an orange stripe instead of cream with a matching orange headstock and a metal volume knob. In 2003, Gibson released his signature model, the Tom DeLonge Signature ES-333, which has only been available since its release in Brown and Cream, with a Natural neck and headstock. Along with his Gibson signature, Tom also used a Fender Jaguar live, as seen in AOL live sessions with the song "Obvious". The Tom DeLonge Signature starts with Gibson's classic semi-hollow body design and then extends it into punk rock with an overwound 'Dirty Fingers' humbucking pickup. Its thick, distorted tone is the signature sound of DeLonge's band Blink-182.[6] On Angels & Airwaves albums, We Don't Need to Whisper and I-Empire Tom has used his signature Gibson ES-333 for all of his live shows. However, he has a number of touring guitars, which he has had made in a few different color combinations, including matte black with a black racing stripe, natural with a black racing stripe and white with a black racing stripe. Since the Blink-182 reunion, he has been seen using his original brown and cream guitar (which now has a Blink-182 'smiley logo' sprayed painted onto the body), his natural and black guitar (which has now been abused with burns, scrapes and stickers), and a new black and white guitar, which is a custom Baritone version of his standard signature guitar, made for playing the song Obvious, and other down-stepped songs. Epiphone has since come out with a lower cost version of the Tom DeLonge signature guitar, manufactured overseas, but fitted with the same Dirty Fingers humbucker.

From very early on in Blink's career, Tom had used a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier amp head and a Marshall JCM 900 amp head along with Mesa Boogie and Marshall cabs for live shows. As his career progressed, Tom began using a intricate rack system along with three matching 4x12 and three 2x12 Mesa Boogie cabs. The rack system still made use of the Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier amp head but it also included a Mesa Boogie 2:90 power amp and Triaxis preamp, Marshall EL34 power amp and JMP-1 preamp and a Voodoo Labs GCX Audio Switcher, all controlled via a Custom Audio Electronics midi footswitch (The rack discontinued the use of the Marshall JCM 900 amp head). The rack system also included a Furman power conditioner and Shure wireless unit.

For Angels and Airwaves, Tom made use of the same rack system minus the Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier but also included a TC Electronic G-Force effects unit as well as two Palmer PGA-04 amp simulators (one for the Triaxis preamp and one for the JMP-1 preamp).

Since the 2009 Blink 182 reunion, Tom has been using two Fender '65 Twin Reverb Amps for clean and two VOX AC30H2 Amps for distortion

Personal life

Tom lives with his wife Jennifer, daughter Ava Elizabeth (born July 15, 2002) and son Jonas Rocket (born on August 16, 2006), German Sheperd Grey, and Labrador Retriever Chloe in Rancho Santa Fe, California. He is the owner of Macbeth Footwear, which he founded with Mark Hoppus (who has now sold his share in the company). He has sold his share in Atticus Clothing, which he founded together with Mark Hoppus and another friend. He has also been politically active during the 2004 and the 2008 presidential races. In 2004, he supported the Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, and in 2008 voiced his support for Barack Obama's campaign. He also created a vegan footwear line through his company Macbeth Footwear

Other accomplishments

Tom directed the music video for Taking Back Sunday's song, "This Photograph Is Proof (I Know You Know)" in 2004.[9] Tom made a cameo appearance as the Burger Jungle drive thru clerk in the movie Idle Hands. Blink-182 is featured in the music documentaries: Riding in Vans with Boys, The Urethra Chronicles, The Urethra Chronicles II: Harder Faster Faster Harder, and upcoming film The Blinkumentary. Tom also made a cameo appearance in the blockbuster film American Pie with his fellow band-mates in Blink-182, acting in a scene while one of their songs, "Mutt", played in the background. Tom made a cameo appearance in The Simpsons with fellow band-mates, while "All The Small Things" played in the background.

Tom has created his own website called Modlife; the site allows bands and their fans can meet up and interact with each other. The artists can also choose whether to have paid subscriptions for certain items.

Clothing companies

In 2001, DeLonge started Atticus Clothing and Macbeth Footwear with fellow Blink-182 band member Mark Hoppus. However, after Mark Hoppus sold his shares in both companies after the hiatus of Blink-182, Tom sold his shares in Atticus Clothing and is currently the sole owner of Macbeth Footwear. Tom has 3 Studio Project Shoes with Macbeth Footwear. The Models are The Brighton, The Matthew and The Bonham.

Quotes :

“Everyone else but me surfs. I grew up skateboarding, but I don't even do that anymore. I'll get hurt and die, ... But if I die, I'll sell more records. We're thinking of doing that. Actually dying.”

Tom DeLonge quote

“Since [Pink Floyd's] The Wall, this has never been done. A third of the movie is CGI, a third of the movie is a documentary and a third of it is a love story. And it basically tells the story of the breakup of one of the biggest bands in the world and the creation of the world's greatest rock band, ... It's a documentary about the past year of my life. But the whole thing is done with metaphors and analogies of World War II. Because World War II was good versus evil, the grand sense of purpose, and seeing as though I started this new part of my life specifically for my family, I felt that it would be an appropriate reference point rather than using modern images.”

Tom DeLonge quote

“Like millions of others, I have been plagued by the devastating effects of cancer hitting not one, but multiple members of my family. Keep A Breast creates events that are not only inspiring and beautiful, they provide a call to action for the millions of teens and young adults are searching for a cause to support.”

Tom DeLonge quote

“I think people buy our records because they finally see three guys that are funny and have personalities but play serious songs about things they can relate to ... Kids say they can relate to what our songs are about. They feel like we're their friends.”

Tom DeLonge quote

“We really take our music seriously and we take the band very seriously. But we have a lot of personality. So if we're going to write a song about kissing a girl, we're gonna write it. And people think we're a funny band, but we're just realistic, we put our personality into our lyrics.”

Tom DeLonge quote

“We were joking about enemas and I said, 'We should call it ”

Tom DeLonge quote

“We're immature guys playing pranks on people, having fun,”

Tom DeLonge quote

“'What's My Age Again?' -- that's really Mark, ... He's 27 and rolling around on the floor naked. We're always like, 'How old are you?'”

Tom DeLonge quote

“Playing music in the wake of the Blink thing was like finding love in the middle of a war zone.”

QUOTES
All the really pretty girls get pregnant.
Mark Hoppus

Everything in high school seems like the most important thing that's ever happened in your life. It's not. You'll get out of high school and you never see those people again. All the people who torment and press you won't make a difference in your life in the long haul.
Mark Hoppus

I dated the same girl all through high school.
Mark Hoppus

I did mostly good things, except light things on fire.
Mark Hoppus

I don't think of them as teenage songs. The things that happen to you in high school are the same things that happen your entire life. You can fall in love at 60; you can get rejected at 80.
Mark Hoppus

I lived in small town out in the desert and my friend used to steal his mom's car in the middle of the night. He'd drive over to my house, I'd sneak out and we'd go out to the desert and just burn things down.
Mark Hoppus

It totally ruins my voice. I quit smoking, drinking, and doing ecstasy.
Mark Hoppus

My parents were pretty lenient with me. But, they gave me morality while I was growing up. They taught me the difference between right and wrong.
Mark Hoppus

Parents don't understand kids and kids don't understand parents. My parents were divorced when I was really young and I went to live with my dad.
Mark Hoppus

Screw them. Yeah. But not literally. I'm not advocating promiscuity.
Mark Hoppus

Thank God I never got in a fight. All of the jock dudes hated me, but all of their girlfriends thought I was nice so they wouldn't touch me. It was infuriating to them.
Mark Hoppus

The naked thing was short-lived. It was only around for about six months because we thought it was shocking. Once people expected us to do it we kind of never did it again.
Mark Hoppus

The thing you realize as you get older is that parents don't know what the Hell they're doing and neither will you when you get to be a parent.
Mark Hoppus

We just kind of did our own thing and got made fun of by the popular kids. It was kind of like a badge of honor to be an outcast.
Mark Hoppus

We're really good friends and we hang out. It's like I get to hang out with my friends and get paid for it.

BIOGRAPHY :
Mark Allan Hoppus (born March 15, 1972) is an American musician and record producer. Hoppus is one of the founding members of the pop punk band Blink-182 and the alternative rock band +44. He plays bass guitar and provides vocals for both bands. As of late, Hoppus has produced albums for groups like Idiot Pilot, New Found Glory, The Matches, and Motion City Soundtrack. He is known for his lower voice and, in Blink-182, usually sings either lead or provides harmony and backing vocals for fellow singer Tom DeLonge.

PERSONAL LIFE :

Personal life

Mark Hoppus was born in Ridgecrest, California on March 15, 1972.[2] At the age of 15, Hoppus received his first bass guitar as a gift from his father Anthony and earned money for a set of amplifiers by helping him paint his garage.[3] Hoppus never took bass lessons, instead he taught himself by playing to bands such as the Descendents, The Cure, and Bad Religion. Hoppus played by himself and sang in the band Pier 69, primarily covering songs by The Cure. He also played in a band called The Attic Children in 1988, during this time he lived in Washington D.C.

Hoppus married Skye Everly in 2000 after meeting on the set of Blink-182's "All the Small Things" video shoot. Two years later, Skye gave birth to their son, Jack Hoppus on August 5, 2002. The three currently reside in Los Angeles, California.

Music career

He later moved to San Diego, where his sister Anne (now Anne McMurray)[1] introduced him to Tom DeLonge in August 1992. DeLonge was a friend of Anne's at the time, and constantly complained about wanting to join a band. When Hoppus first went over to DeLonge's house, he was told DeLonge would be at the local skate park. Hoppus went over and found DeLonge skateboarding with his friends. Hoppus wanted to impress DeLonge, so he climbed on a lamp post, jumped off and cracked both ankles and heels and was on crutches for three weeks. He then started playing with DeLonge in his garage and they recruited original drummer, Scott Raynor. They went on to form Blink-182. In 1998, Travis Barker joined the band during a tour in California. Blink-182 went on to record many more albums which made the band very successful. The band recorded two number one hits, "All the Small Things" and "I Miss You", before initiating a hiatus in early 2005.

In early 2009 Blink-182 reunited and subsequently mounted a nationwide tour during the summer, and are already working on material for a new album as well as a possible European tour in 2010. Although Hoppus still carries his work loads as a producer and duties to +44, he has stated that Blink-182 will be his main priority.

OTHER WORK :

After Blink-182 went on an indefinite hiatus in 2005, Hoppus wanted to continue to write and play music so he started +44, with fellow Blink-182 band mate Travis Barker. In 2006, they released their first album entitled When Your Heart Stops Beating. The band have recently signed a deal with Interscope Records and are currently in production of their second studio album.[4]

In early 2010, Hoppus started releasing music with a side project, 10 Hours at the Machine. In regards to this Hoppus released a statment through twitter stating "10HRSattheMACHINE is not blink-182 nor solo project. It's something I'm doing with friends while Tom finishes his album. Then blink-182!!".

Equipment

Hoppus has been seen using his signature Fender Mark Hoppus Jazz Bass in a variety of different colors since the days of Blink-182. Though considered to be a Precision Bass, Hoppus's signature consists of a Jazz Bass body with a Precision Bass neck and pickup. Recently, Hoppus's signature underwent a slight modification: the bodies are now made of Ash instead of Alder, making the bass lighter. The pickup locations were also switched from their usual positions: they were placed under the E and A strings was also placed under the D and G strings and moved above the original position, placed higher than the pickup under the E and A strings, giving the D and G bass strings a warmer, thicker bass sound. The pickups Hoppus uses are Seymour Duncan Quarter-Pound pickups, the same as is on the Fender Precision Bass. The current colors of his +44 touring basses include Olympic White, Sunburst and See-Through Blond all coupled with a tortoise shell pickguard. During Blink-182 first live performance his signature bass colour changes to white. Besides his signature basses, Hoppus was seen using one other bass guitar live on stage: the six-stringed Fender Bass VI, most notably for the song "I Miss You".[3] Mark also uses Fender Precision Bass which was first seen in Dammit, What's My Age Again?, and All The Small Things His later P-Bass like his signature bass has only one volume knob. His P-Bass last appearance was in the video Stay Together For The Kids with a Sunburst Colour and White Pickguard. His Sunburst P-Bass was also seen again with Mark recording (+44)'s second studio album. Prior to the use of Fender Basses, Hoppus heavily used Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray basses in various colors during the early days of Blink-182 up until the early Enema of the State period.

For live sound, Hoppus plugs his basses into three Ampeg SVT Classic bass heads running into two Ampeg 8x10 SVT bass cabs. Prior to the use of the all-tube SVT Classic heads, Hoppus used two Ampeg SVT-4 Pro heads which only feature a tube preamp.[5]

HiMyNameIsMark

"HiMyNameIsMark" (also known as 'The Morning Zoo') is a podcast that was set up in the wake of the hiatus by Hoppus, and can be found at HiMyNameIsMark.com. Every few weeks he released a show of songs by underground bands, interviews with band members and/or friends, and reminisces about happenings in his life. He is often joined on the show by his friends Chris Holmes (+44's engineer) and James Ingram (+44's assistant engineer). In 2005, Hoppus won the "Best Podcast" award, beating out many of the hottest podcasts. Hoppus has also created various side projects including "Hopp on Pop" where he reviews one of his favorite up and coming artists, some of which have been: Matt and Kim and Japandroids.

Non-musical endeavors

Hoppus and Tom DeLonge co-owned two companies, Atticus and Macbeth Athletics, Hoppus has since sold his share in both companies; as well as loserkids.com.[6]

Hoppus was a guest actor on an episode of the show Haunted in 2002.[7] He also wrote columns for Risen Magazine's March/April and May/June 2005 issues entitled "Beyond Us".[8] Mark Hoppus was also confirmed to be a part One Nine Nine Four, a film about the punk rock movement in the 90's. In 1999, Hoppus also made a cameo appearance along with his fellow Blink-182 members Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker in the comedy film American Pie. In 2003, Hoppus, DeLonge, Barker and Tony Hawk made a cameo in the 300th episode of The Simpsons.
